Admission Procedure

Admission is open to graduates of ABET-accredited undergraduate curricula in engineering, or graduates of other technical curricula who satisfy prerequisites depending on their academic backgrounds.

In order to pursue any graduate program at UT, a formal application for admission must be made to the Graduate School. The graduate catalog includes instructions for the application procedure and a Graduate Application for Admission form. Apply using this online application.

Admission to the Graduate School does NOT ensure acceptance into specific degree program, nor admission to candidacy for the degree desired. The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering must approve all students for admission to potential degree and non-degree status in industrial engineering and recommend appropriate action to the Graduate School.

What is required: Three letters of reference, preferably some from professors, statement of purpose, transcripts and TOEFL if necessary.

What is optional: GRE score

MS Admission Requirements

The graduate committee in the department sets any prerequisite courses or other measures that apply to the particular situation of the applicant. The department and the Office of Graduate Admissions and Records must be notified of any change in the entering date after admission has been granted. The GRE is not required for master’s-level engineering programs.

PhD Admission Requirements

Admission to the PhD program in industrial engineering requires an undergraduate degree and academic background that meets the admission criteria for the master’s program in industrial engineering; a master’s degree in industrial engineering or a closely related field, or in another engineering field; and previous academic performance that clearly demonstrates the potential for exceptional scholarly attainment and the capacity to do original research and technical investigative work. If admitted, prerequisites (if required) will be established by the graduate committee based on the student’s academic background. Taking the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) test is optional when applying for admittance to any engineering PhD program.
