Prospective Students

Letter to Prospective Students

We are delighted that you are interested in engineering as a future career. Soon you will have to choose a specific engineering discipline in which to get an education at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and then practice for a significant portion of your life. This is a very important decision. We want to share with you some thoughts about a branch of engineering that might be just the right discipline for you.

Industrial engineering is an engineering discipline devoted to the design, installation, improvement and control of integrated systems of people, materials, and facilities in a wide range of organizations that produce goods or render services. Like other engineering fields, industrial engineering is concerned with solving problems through the application of specialized knowledge in mathematics, science and computer technologies, as well as the principles of engineering. An important characteristic of industrial engineering is its systems approach to integrate the basic resources of technology, people, process, information, energy, and other relevant resources to create a smooth, efficient and competitive operation. Industrial engineers are needed in virtually all enterprises engaged in system design, information systems, process planning, manufacturing, and scheduling. Graduates from our program have found employment in manufacturing industries, health care, engineering consulting firms, financial institutions, transportation companies, government offices, military agencies, and construction firms.

Industrial engineering is, indeed, a very versatile field of engineering. We will be delighted to welcome you to our department. Please surf through our website to find out additional information.
