Abstract:
We plan to have an interactive discussion with the faculty and students. Jim Della Valle, Joe Jernigan, and Shirish Joshi will discuss the applications of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research solutions that are currently being created & implemented at CVS Health. Discussion topics will include strategic approach to the network design for the CVS Logistics network, classical Industrial Engineering approaches applied to continuous improvement initiatives, data analytics, and more. We will also discuss career opportunities at CVS Health for Industrial & Systems Engineers.
We would encourage a healthy student interaction so that we can mutually learn from this discussion. Any student projects or thesis applications in these areas will also be a good stimulant to this discussion. This can be an initial discussion on how we bridge the gap between UT research at the ISE Department and work being done at CVS Health in the area of Logistics & Supply Chain. The goal is to explore a road map for future collaboration.
Joe Jernigan is the Senior Director of Industrial Engineering for logistics at CVS Health. Joe and his team of 15 engineers provide support for a rapidly adapting logistics network, consisting of over 7,600 colleagues, 18 centers, and a pharmaceutical repackaging facility. His focus has centered on 3 areas aimed at driving logistics success; performance management, continuous improvement, and business decision analytics. Joe is a 1987 graduate of The University of Tennessee, with a BS in Industrial Engineering. He launched his professional career in manufacturing prior to joining CVS Health in 1994. He attended the Logistics Executive Development Program at UTK in 1999. Over his 21 years with CVS Health, Joe has served in a combination of engineering, project and operational roles.

Shirish Joshi is Director of Supply Chain Services at CVS Health. Shirish is responsible for Mathematical modeling and analytics in the Logistics & Supply Chain group. His focus is on strategic network design, optimizing store alignments with the Distribution Centers (DC), routing simulations, optimizing product flows, and predictive analytics in the DCs. Shirish holds a Ph.D. in Industrial & Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech. He has over 20 years experience in various industry verticals in research & development as well in strategic planning and operations.

Jim Della Valle is a Sr. Director of Supply Chain Transformation and Outbound Transportation at CVS Health. His responsibilities include Strategic Planning & Analytics, Logistics Network Planning and Outbound Transportation. Jim is senior executive with 35 years of Logistics/Distribution/Operations experience with highly regarded medical device and industrial companies. He has successfully developed and implemented multiple strategic logistics network plans using modeling tools and cross-functional teams. Jim has led multiple operational turnarounds and the development/implementation of distribution technology and automation.
