Nevin Sawyer, a senior in industrial engineering, won first place in the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Technical Paper Competition at the 2016 IIE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference on February 27, 2016. His paper, titled “Investigation and Evaluation of Microgrid Optimization Techniques,” described his research in evaluating the effectiveness of different optimization approaches such as linear programming, stochastic programming, and shadow price analysis.
Sawyer’s conducted his research by constructing a math model to simulate a microgrid, optimizing its operations, and then analyzing its economic output. A microgrid is an energy distribution system containing multiple energy sources. Alternate energy-providing methods are increasingly popular, so efforts are being made to find more efficient, intelligent ways to integrate these energy sources.
